Illustrator, artist and writer, Susan Bennett Lopez is a former New Yorker and relative newcomer to the Knoxville, TN arts scene. As a long time film industry professional, she spent 8 years working in the film, video and animation department at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and went on to become the Vice President of Business Development for NYCastings before moving to Tennessee in 2008 to exclusively pursue fine art.
She has a passion for flea market finds and loves breathing new life into abandoned everyday objects, toys & images with a story all their own. Bennett-Lopez is fascinated with and frequently paints the images of America through the careworn, often unassuming characters who dwell on the outskirts of mainstream society. Much of her work focuses on the overlooked qualities and characteristics in her subjects. Known best for working in terra cotta, polymers and experimental mixed media, she spins a world of not only distant jazz and poetry-fueled nights, but also a milieu whose inhabitants quietly thrive in spite of adversity.
Her work has shown in galleries in New York City, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. Currently she has several photographs showing in the “Art of Instagram” exhibition at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art in conjunction with the Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles and the New Media International Expo.
She has contributed to the Nashville chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation annual charity auction and in 2011 contributed multiple pieces created on musical instruments damaged during the May 2010 Nashville floods with proceeds going to the Tennessee non-profit organization, Retune Nashville.
